Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Adam Zolty is a composer and visual artist currently living and working in London, UK. Growing up in a family of professional dancers, Adam strives to create music in tune with his sensitivities to dance, and physical motion, which he uses to inspire and guide his creative process. He often incorporates multimedia elements such as film and theatre to further convey the influence of motion in his music, as demonstrated in pieces like Fast Forward (2022) for violin and fixed media, and The Manicurist (2024), an opera in one act.
Adam’s music has been performed across Canada, the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom. In Canada and the United states he has garnered numerous performances by esteemed ensembles and performers including: NU:BC Ensemble, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Phoenix Chamber Choir, Turning Point Ensemble, University of British Columbia Symphony and Symphonic Wind Ensembles, Piano Pinnacle, Bergmann Duo, PEP Piano and Erhu Project, Corey Hamm, Monica Chew, Leo Eguchi, Haruka Fuji, and Heidi Krutzen. In 2019, Adam became a composer fellow of the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music in the United States where he has received his most recent commissions including Rise (2023) for oboe virtuoso, Kyle Bruckmann in San Francisco CA, and Anthill (2023) for electric guitarist, Andrew Noseworthy in Toronto, Ontario.
In Canada, Adam has been recognized with awards for his work including the Socan Foundation's 2018 Serge Garant Award for Young Composers, the William F. Hobden Prize in Music (2017), and first place recipient of the Vancouver Chamber Choir Young Composers Competition (2009). He is has also received scholarships which include the University of British Columbia’s Ernest Wesley Cubitt Sharpe Memorial and Cortland Hultberg Memorial scholarships, as well as the British Columbia Arts Council Scholarship for music composition on two occasions.
Adam holds a Bachelors of Music degree from the University of British Columbia (2019), where he studied composition under Dorothy Chang, Stephen Chatman, Keith Hamel, and Jocelyn Morlock. He briefly pursued master’s studies at USC Thornton School of Music (2020) in Los Angeles under Frank Ticheli, Ted Hearne, and Sean Friar before continuing his studies with David Sawer at the Royal Academy of Music in London, U.K. (2023).
